Talented kickboxing sisters are queens of the ring

DYNAMIC kickboxing sisters Lucie and Josie Callan, of Hucknall, continue to forge a reputation as being among the best pound-for-pound fighters in the country — and they have the belts to prove it.

For earlier this month, 13-year-old Josie landed an area title in Blackburn in a five-round contest.

She comfortably took the fight, despite giving up a 15kg weight advantage to her rival, Courtney Burgess.

This also adds to a title Lucie (ten) took when she unleashed a technical knockout on her opponent. Again the fight was in Blackburn.

The youngsters are so dedicated that during a holiday to Butlin’s in Skegness on the East Coast recently, they got up at 6.30 am every day to run for two miles and continued their training at the Skegness Freestyle Kickboxing outfit.

Josie, who goes to Holgate Comprehensive School in Hucknall, currently holds the English under-40kg title, which she won earlier this year against Marie Keenan, of Sheffield.

Lucie also hit the headlines earlier this year when she did battle in the British Open Championships and stormed to glory in her under-35kg category to win a prestigious belt.

The duo, of Oakenhall Avenue, are continuing to hone their skills at their own club, Torkard Kickboxing, which has been set up by their dad, Garry.

The Callan girls have embarked on a rigorous training regime put together by Garry, who used to box competitively while he was in the Army. They run up to four miles a day and he has even bought them their own ring so they can train at home.

Josie and Lucie also fight for Dean Sugden out of the Newark Martial Arts Club.

Now all their effort is paying off as they continue to collect impressive wins.

Among their most recent contests have been bouts in Scotland, Derby and Burton.

Outside the ring, Josie has landed a school award for achievements in PE and was among the nominees for the Pride of Hucknall awards.
