Two-goal Topliss sends Town into next round of FA Trophy
HERO Julian Topliss netted twice as Hucknall Town came from behind to earn a spot in the next round of the FA Trophy on Saturday.
The days when The Yellows progressed to the final of this competition in 2005 at Villa Park seem a long time ago.
But at Watnall Road, against Market Drayton Town, they showed plenty of fighting spirit in the Preliminary Round to win 2-1.
None more so than in the second half when they overturned a deficit.
Earlier in the match, Hucknall thought they had taken the lead on the half-hour when Danny Hayes headed in from a corner but the goal was chalked off.
Just four minutes later, the visitors grabbed the advantage. Hucknall failed to clear their lines and as the ball came back into the box, Dorrey Proffitt turned and placed his shot wide of Jason Fisher.
Soon after the break, Yellows boss Brett Marshall introduced big striker Ben Good and within a minute of coming on he released Topliss on the right and although he still had a lot of work to do, he cut inside and drove a shot across Stevens and into the bottom corner.
The Yellows could sense a much-needed first home victory of the season and Warren Hatfield’s quick long throw found Brown, but his shot was quickly charged down and from another Hatfield throw, the ball bounced in the box causing confusion and was headed over for a corner.
It was all Hucknall and somehow the ball stayed out of the Market Drayton goal after a scramble but the home side weren’t to be denied, Steely midfielder and skipper for the day Lee Mellon played a delightful ball over the top for Topliss and the striker seemed to take an unnecessary touch but managed to poke the ball home at the near post to give the Yellows a deserved lead.
The goal proved to be the winner and sets up a clash in the next round with divisional rivals Newcastle Town.
