Welfare maintain their unbeaten start

Linby Colliery Welfare kept up their fine start to the Central Midlands League South season with a draw at home to Belper United on Saturday and then victory at Sutton Town on Tuesday night.

Against Belper, another 100-plus crowd saw debuts for 23-year-old goalkeeper Jack Harvey and defender Duncan Paterson, and both were tested early on by United’s direct tactics.

At the other end, Linby began to get a grip on the game and Az Ryan and Matt Murphy both saw Belper keeper Adam Jablonski save their efforts well.

United’s Jordan McRobie hit the post on 33 minutes before a similar fate befell Linby’s Kyle McDermott before half-time after he’d rounded Jablonski but couldn’t score from a narrow angle.

Linby finally took the lead on the hour when Dave Marlow’s free-kick wasn’t cleared and brother Simon smacked a superb volley past the hapless keeper for 1-0.

But despite excellent work from the defence throughout, Belper wuold level late on from the penalty spot after Jon Dakers was adjudged to have fouled Adam Taylor, McRobie netting from 12 yards to seal a point.

Tuesday saw Linby produce a great display to overcome Sutton, who had won five out of five beforehand.

But they had no answer to Linby’s passing game, the visitors weathering the storm of long high balls throughout.

Sutton had striker Craig Mitchell sent off for two bookable offences before half-time, and it was after the break that Linby took hold.

They led on 54 minutes when Ash Winfield fed Matt Murphy and he finished well when one-on-one with keeper Gavin Saxby, but McDermott was then red carded on 75 for a second bookable offence to leave both sides a man short.

On 83 minutes it was 2-0 as Murphy scored well from a narrow angle, in off the bar.

The third came two minutes from time, Murphy completing his first hat-trick at this level after Winfield’s 30-yarder had been parried, securing an outstanding three points for Linby.
