FULL THROTTLE action from Tuesdays match with Stamford at Watnall Road

HUCKNALLl Town couldn’t build on Saturday’s win over Chasetown as they let a two-goal lead slip in a 2-2 draw with Stamford on Tuesday night in Division One South of the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League.

Both sides started brightly, Stamford keeper Matt Finlay alert early on to deny Julian Topliss and Sam Mullarkey twice going close for the visitors.

THe lead came Hucknall’s way on 23 minutes when a corner went straight through the Stamford defence and Evan Garnett drove the ball across Finlay into the far corner to put the home side ahead.

Gary King steered a good chance wide for the visitors not long afterwards, but it was 2-0 on 34 minutes when defender Jack Cotton pulled up whilst chasing a through ball, leaving plenty of space for Topliss to receive the ball and put Hucknall further ahead.

But two goals in the space of two minutes were to bring Stamford level before half-time.

First Danny Brooks curled the ball past Jason Fisher with the outside of his foot from 25 yards.

Then Andy Hall teased a Hucknall defender then skipped past him to deliver a great cross. King’s shot was blocked but Louis Hamilton followed up to smash the ball home.

The second-half saw Hucknall look dangerous going forward with Garnett in particular a threat on the wings, whipping in testing crosses which either went straight through the defence or a defender did enough to keep the ball away from a Hucknall forward.

Mullarkey nearly netted for Stamford late on but his shot flashed past the post and ultimately each side had to be content with a point each.
