THE gala-day finale might no longer be held in Hucknall. But there are still lots of opportunities for locals to take part in the upcoming Active Ashfield Games and Ashfield Festival.
Gone are the days when Titchfield Park hosted the showpiece of the Ashfield District Council festival of sport. The format has now been changed, with the main event switching to Sutton Lawn at Sutton-in-Ashfield on Saturday July 7.
That climaxes a week-long celebration of sport and culture, under the Ashfield Festival banner, which starts with the Active Ashfield Games opening ceremony at Ashfield School the previous Saturday (June 30).
During the run-up, free weekly coaching sessions are taking place across Ashfield, including Hucknall, in athletics, gymnastics and hockey. The sessions are being delivered by fully-qualified coaches from local clubs. If you are interested in taking part, all you need to do is turn up at one of the sessions.
The coaching will lead to qualification for the competitions at the Active Ashfield Games themselves.
The festival will include a whole range of sporting activities for all ages, including Xtreme sports, athletics, football, ‘It’s A Knockout’, angling, skating and much more. The finale day will also feature many of the favourites from the Ashfield Show, such as the performance zone, dance zone, music stage, funfair, catering, trade and charity stalls.
Ashfield District Council’s deputy leader, Coun John Wilmott (Lab), of Hucknall, said: “The coaching sessions will provide an opportunity to try out sport in a fun and friendly environment. The Active Ashfield Games opening ceremony will kick off an exciting week of sport and culture for the residents of Ashfield to get involved in and enjoy.”
