HUCKNALL ROLLS LEISURE put in a hard-working performance to claim an opening day 1-0 victory at Kimberley Miners Welfare in the Senior Division of the Notts Senior League.
It was a match that Rolls might have lost in previous guises, with them having to repel Kimberley pressure for most of the second-half.
There were excellent debuts for four summer signings, as Jack James and Jack Allen gelled well in midfield, James Duncan looked assured at the back next to new skipper Aaron Short and Danny Bainbridge gave Rolls a composure sometimes lacking in previous seasons.
The goal was scored mid-way through the first-half, predictably by all-time leading NSL scorer Andy Start, prodding home at the far post after a deep cross from the left by Ant Wallis.
Rolls played well in the first period in baking heat but faded badly after the break and were indebted to new reserve goalkeeping signing Chris Northmore who was excellent all afternoon, as he made three or four fantastic saves to ensure Rolls won.
Everyone played their part but man-of-the-match went to Northmore, who shaded returing defender Simon Hulme for the award.
Rolls’ next test will be this Saturday (25th) when they visit Magdala Amateurs for a 3pm kick-off.
