The Annesley Road school has become the first in the four-year history of the Nottinghamshire schools’ basketball tournament to take two titles.

What’s more, the success earned at the Clifton campus of Nottingham Trent University has qualified the teams for the national schools’ tournament.

David Dean, a PE teacher at National, and Hucknall-based coach Martin Richardson, are involved with the teams.

“They’ve done brilliantly,” said David. “They deserve a lot of credit for the way they performed.”

To qualify for the county finals, the boys’ team had to win an Ashfield-based league, whereas the girls were selected to represent the district.

At the finals day, each competed in one of two leagues of four in a round-robin tournament to decide semi-finalists in each age-group.

In their final, the boys comprehensively beat Trinity School of Aspley with Luke Mitchell, who is a member of the England junior development squad, their star man.

The girls overcame The Becket School, of West Bridgford, in their showpiece.

Both will now face the Lincolnshire champions in the national contest on dates to be announced.

The Nottinghamshire county tournament represented an important landmark because it was the first contest run by the relaunched Nottinghamshire Schools Basketball Association.

Well-known basketball development officer Jimmy ‘Jumpshot’ Smith congratulated the National teams.
