HUCKNALL bowls king Dave Adams has brought his total of Nottinghamshire titles in the sport to a remarkable 44.
Dave, of Kersall Gardens, Hucknall, and Ron Clurow, who lives on the town’s Common Lane, have carried off the senior pairs title.
In the final, they beat a duo from Farnsfield Bowls Club after storming into an 18-1 lead.
Dave then joined his wife, Janet, to win the county mixed pairs competition. They defeated a pair from Bilsthorpe and it is the second time the couple have scooped this title.
It was Janet’s 11th county title and Ron’s first. All three are members of Hucknall’s Rolls-Royce club and they will represent Nottinghamshire in the national finals, to be held at Skegness this month.
Altogether, Dave has won a prolific 154 bowls trophies, some with Janet, and they have long since run out of room in their home to display them all, with some of them boxed up.
Dave (67) was employed at the National Coal’s Board’s area workshops in Bestwood for 20 years.
He played football for 30 years with teams which included Newstead Welfare, Stag Cabinet, Nottingham Spartak and Bestwood Welfare before taking up bowls.
“It is a big challenge to keep yourself fit, particularly when you find yourself up against players as young as 18 or 19,” said Dave.
He has played for Nottinghamshire bowls team more than 300 times and still represents the county. “That is something I am very proud of,” he says.
“I kept persuading Janet to have a go at bowls and she eventually did so when the last of our children left home. She took to it like a duck to water and she is now an excellent player in her own right.”
Dave says the heavy rain for much of this summer has not hit bowls as much as people might expect because greens are usually well drained.
Ron (75) was a miner at Linby Colliery until his retirement. He said: “I played golf for 40 years but switched to bowls when I started to suffer knee and back problems.
“I have played a lot of sport but winning a county bowls title is certainly my highlight.”
