THE Hucknall-based ROLLS-ROYCE LEISURE club made en encouraging start to the 2012 bowls season by winning seven of their opening nine matches.

Rolls looked particularly strong in the First Division of the Notts Saturday 3X3 Federation, carving out 5-1 victories over West Bridgford and then Nuthall Northern.

They licked Bridgford by 68 shots to 61, thanks largely to the rink of Rose Hobbs, John Etches and Alan Parker, who scored a seven on the first end to set up a 34-14 romp.

Maureen Gunn, Adam Wright and Geoff Gunn fought back from 18-14 down with only two ends to play to win 21-18 but Ann Taylor, Mark Foulds and Stuart Newton fell to a heavy 29-13 reverse.

Against Nuthall, the locals also won two of the three rinks to glide home by 64 shots to 54.

The only losers were Adam Wright, Stuart Newton and Mark Foulds, who went down 24-19. Grenville Foulds, Roy Walker and Alan Parker triumphed 21-14, while Pauline Harvey, Graham Fowler and Bert Wright swept home by eight shots, 24-16.

ROLLS also enjoyed a brace of successes in the Notts Men’s EBA 3X4 Open League, racing to fine victories over Russell and then Notts Constabulary.

They routed Russell 6-0 (62 shots to 36) after terrific wins for Geoff Gunn, Ron Clurow, Mark Foulds and Dave Adams (22-10), who took 13 of the 18 ends, John Etches, Adam Wright, Roy Walker and Dave Breedon (20-11) and Alan Harvey, Bert Wright, Stuart Newton and Alan Parker (20-15).

Against the Constabulary, Rolls arrested their opponents to triumph 4-2 (51 shots to 48), even though they won on only one rink — that of Alan Harvey, Ron Clurow, Stuart Newton and Alan Parker, who eased home 19-11.

Geoff Gunn, Keith Powell, Mark Foulds and Dave Adams dropped seven shots on the last two ends to turn a 17-13 lead into a 20-17 defeat, while Roy Walker, John Walker, Bert Wright and Dave Breedon were pipped 17-15, despite a late rally.

IN DIVISION One of the Notts Midweek Mixed Federation, Rolls recovered well from an opening defeat against Carlton to register a convincing win over Lowdham.

Against Carlton, they won two of the four rinks but were edged out 5-2 (72 shots to 70).

Janet Adams, Mark Foulds and Dave Adams scored a six and two fours en route to a 24-15 victory, while Ann Taylor, Keith Powell and Alan Parker squeezed home by one shot, 18-17.

However Pauline Harvey, John Etches and Stuart Newton trailed throughout to lose 15-13, while Lily Bennington, Ron Clurow and Alan Harvey lost 25-15.

Against Lowdham, success on three of the four rinks ensured a comfortable 6-1 triumph (84 shots to 61).

Leading the way were Pauline Harvey, Mark Foulds and Stuart Newton, who scored a six and four fours in a 29-12 win. Janet Adams, Grenville Foulds and Dave Adams inched to a 20-18 victory, despite scoring on fewer ends than their opponents, and Rose Hobbs, Keith Powell and Alan Parker finished 20-10 up.

The only losing rink was Ann Taylor, Ron Clurow and Alan Harvey (21-15).

THE PICK of Rolls’s other three matches was a 5-2 (93 shots to 60) victory over local-derby rivals HUCKNALL TITCHFIELD PARK in the Second Division of the Notts Mixed EBA League.

Stars of the show were Maureen Gunn, Geoff Gunn and Bert Wright, who allowed their opponents just a single shot, on the 15th end, for a runaway 46-1 win.

Lily Bennington, Roy Walker and Alan Walker also triumphed, scoring a six and a five in a 28-15 success. But Ann Taylor, Mark Foulds and Stuart Newton dropped eight shots on the last three ends to go down 20-13, while Pauline Harvey, John Etches and Alan Harvey had a game to forget, crashing 24-6.

Rolls failed to find similar form against Clifton in Division One of the Notts Midweek 3X3 Federation, losing 5.5-0.5 (54 shots to 42), nor against SKBC in the Third Division of the Ashfield 4X2 Saturday League, crashing 14-0 (81 shots to 65).

The only half-point scored in the two fixtures was by Rose Hobbs, Keith Powell and Stuart Newton in a 15-15 draw.
