BOXING fanatic Barry O’Dowd, of Bulwell, was crowned the ‘Coach Of The Year’ at Nottingham’s glittering sports awards.

The 64-year-old (pictured) has been involved in the sport for decades and was a junior champion in the Army at the age of 17.

But it has been his dedicated involvement at the grass roots of the sport that has earned him recognition, culminating in lifting the prize at the Council House.

O’Dowd, of Fradley Close, Bulwell Hall, is head coach and founder of the Bulwell Hall Boxing Club.

He has been influential in keeping the club alive and earlier this year took part in the Olympic Torch relay as part of the London 2012 Games.

He was responsible for the penultimate leg before handing over to former Olympic gold medalists Torvill and Dean.
