The gymnastics family Downie, from Hucknall, have added another medal to their remarkable collection this year.

For 15-year-old Ellie Downie landed bronze in the all-around competition at the Summer Youth Olympics Games in Nanjing, China.

It was a repeat of her success at Sofia in May when she made history by becoming the first British gymnast to gain an all-around medal at the European Championships.

She won two other medals at the Euros, while older sister Becky (22) bagged a pair of medals both at Sofia and at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

No wonder mum Helen was beaming with pride this week at the family home off Nottingham Road in Hucknall.

The all-around event encompasses the disciplines of vault, floor, uneven bars and balance beam. The scores for each are added together.

Ellie was lying second going into the final floor routine, only for a fall to cost her the chance of gold.

However, she was still delighted by third place, saying: “I was hoping for the top six or top ten, so to win bronze is great. This means everything to me.”

Attention now focuses at the Games to the individual apparatus events, with Ellie gunning for gold in the vault on Sunday.
