CRICKET: Easy for Abbey

NEWSTEAD Abbey recorded their fifth outright Gunn and Moore South Notts League, Division C victory of the season with a 62-run win over bottom-of-the-table visitors Gedling and Sherwood.

Batting first, Newstead totalled 147-8 from their 48 overs and then bowled the visitors out for just 85 in 26.1 overs.

A Nick Rose half-century for Newstead was given support from Rob Casterton’s ungbeaten 32 with John Gell the top wicket-taker for Gedling Sherwood with 4-31.

In reply, the visitors had only Steve Carmody post an innings of any note as he top-scored with 22.

That was down to the superb bowling figures achieved by Newstead Abbey’s Matt Lane who finished with 6-47.

He was ably backed up by Adam Gilbert with 2-8 and Nick Hand 2-23.
