Swimming for the first time since the county championships, HUCKNALL FALCON proved they are still in fine form when tackling a Notts ASA Stage Three gala at the Hucknall Leisure Centre Pool.

Falcon failed to win any of the races as they finished fifth in the six-team gala. But they collected no fewer than eight runners-up places and also clocked several personal-best (PB) times.

They also handed debuts to three swimmers who have recently joined the club -- Ben Canavan-Taylor, Esme Wood and his younger brother, Nathaniel Wood.

Canavan-Taylor marked his first appearance with an excellent second in the boys’ open 100m backstroke event, plus two PBs, while Nathaniel Wood was runner-up in the boys’ 14-and-under 100m butterfly and 100m freestyle.

Commented head coach Ian Melvin: “It was great to see us perform so well.

“Those who did not compete in the county championships last year will definitely be knocking on the door for next year.”

The list of second spots also included a double by the boys’ open relay team, made up predominantly of Sam Murden, Canavan-Taylor and Kyle Raison.

The trio were joined by Daniel Terry to finish runners-up in the 4X50m freestyle relay, in which all four swimmers recorded PBs, and by James Terry to finish second in the 4X50m medley relay.

Boys’ senior captain Murden himself was also second in the boys’ open 100m butterfly, while Falcon’s other runners-up positions were filled by Sophie Melvin in the girls’ 14-and-under 100m butterfly, Chloe Melvin in the girls’ open 100m individual medley and Archie Penlington in the boys’ 14-and-under 100m individual medley.

In all, Murden clocked three PBs, as did girls’ senior captain Sophie Melvin and also George Webster.

The others were returned by: Lauren Straw (2), Benjamin Davies (2), girls’ junior captain Ellie Barker, Curtis Gregory, James Terry, Ryan Sanders, Maje Felten, Nathaniel Wood, Harvey Green, Adam Webber, Sophie Hutson, Emily Butler and Grace Allsop.

RESULT -- Sherwood A 241 points, Sutton 192, Arnold 148, Carlton and Bingham 144, HUCKNALL FALCON 126, Mansfield B 44.
