Unbeaten club rivals, Royal British Legion A and Royal British Legion B, continue to rule the roost at the top of the HUCKNALL EPA POOL LEAGUE as the season enters its third month.
Legion A maintained their two-point lead in first spot with a 5-3 victory at home to The Dragon, while second-placed Legion B stepped up their pursuit with a 7-1 cruise at Green Dragon.
The A team, who have now won eight of their nine matches, always just had their noses in front after taking the opening two legs through Michael Holmes-Parker and Mick Fowkes. Plucky Dragon pulled it back to 2-1, 3-2 and 4-3, but further wins for Dave Wainwright and Curly Johnstone on both singles and pairs settled it for the home side.
It was much more comfortable for Legion B, whose victors were Joe Etherington, Colin Draycott, Malc Grocock, Geoff Taylor, Wayne Cartledge, John Toulson and the pairing of Etherington and Taylor.
The chasing pack, which is already four points adrift of the Legion outfits, is headed by reigning champions Station Hotel B, even though tbhey were held to a 4-4 draw by their inter-pub rivals, Station Hotel A, in their latest fixture.
The A team looked poised to cause an upset when easing into a 3-1 lead. But wins for Dave Butler, John Nunns and the pairing of Butler and Paddy McShane turned things round for the B team, so all rested on the last leg, which saw McShane lose to Alan Foster.
At the wrong end of the table, Bestwood Village Social Club are now next to bottom after a 6-2 defeat at home to improving Chequers, who never looked back after racing into a 4-0 lead, helped by singles successes for Ian Flint, Chris Green and Rob Simpson.
The week’s other two fixtures resulted in victories for improving duo Liberal Club, at home to Empire (7-1), and H2O, who were indebted to Dave Ellis on the last leg at home to Yew Tree (5-3).
