GOALS, goals and more goals were the order of the day for the Hucknall and Bulwell stars of local football last season.
As well as gunning for cups and league titles, the entertainers also had an eye on another prestigious prize — the Specsavers Goals Awards run by the Dispatch.
The competition is run with sponsorship backing from the community-minded Specsavers store on High Street.
It was launched two seasons ago with the aim of recognising those marksmen and teams with a commitment to attacking football and an eye for goal.
Prizes of £100 were up for grabs for the highest-scoring players in league and cup football on Saturdays and Sundays.
Now the cheques have been handed over to the winners who are already hatching plans on how they will top their goalscoring achievements next season.
Winners in the Saturday team category were Bulwell, who smacked in 144 goals on their way to winning the Senior Division of the Notts Senior League by a record margin after overturning a daunting points deficit.
They completed a double by winning the league cup.
But they didn’t possess the star striker in Saturday footballer, for Matt Rick, of Hucknall Rolls Leisure, netted 37 times to top the charts.
On Sundays, Hucknall outfit The Masons were the top entertainers with 76 goals, while Kane Matthews, of Green Dragon, was the top individual scorer with a total of 23.
Specsavers has been unstinting in its backing for the competition.
Store director and optometrist Stephen Archer said: “It’s great to see the success of local teams in Hucknall and Bulwell and we are really pleased that we can continue to support this fantastic competition.
“Any refs who feel the need to come and see us to get their eyesight checked to avoid dropping a boob on any key decisions next season are welcome to drop in for a test!”
