A FAMILIAR name that has been missing from the early-season headlines bounced back with a bang for HUCKNALL ROLLS LEISURE in the Notts Senior League’s Senior Division.
Prolific goalscorer Andy Start has hardly figured at all this term after taking his annual September holiday and then receiving a hefty suspension for a rare red card.
But he returned to net a couple of goals and make the other as Rolls continued their improvement in form to win 3-1 away to Awsworth Villa, who had started the campaign strongly.
The locals were without six players from the previous week’s Notts FA Senior County Cup win but underlined that their squad has more strength in depth than many might realise.
Start was on target from the tenth minute when he tucked away a spot-kick after being brought down by the ‘keeper as he raced on to a through ball from John Greeley.
Five minutes later, an excellent move led to Anthony Wallis finding Start, whose first-time ball round the corner enabled strike partner Matt Rick to blast home from 12 yards.
Awsworth halved the deficit in the 16th minute when a long punt over the top was chased by Kieran Saxton, who lobbed advancing ‘keeper Mark Rollson from an angle.
But the match was all but sealed on the hour when Start not only converted his second penalty but the home side are also reduced to ten men by a red card for their goalie, who tried to punch Rick.
In the last third of the game, Rolls eased off badly but never looked in any serious trouble, with man-of-the-match Johnny Buckley dominant at the heart of the backline, alongside fresh face Joe Hunt.
ROLLS LINE-UP (4-4-2) — Rollson/ Paterson I., Buckley, Hunt, Tolley/ Wallis, Greeley, Niblett, Osborne/ Rick, Start A. Subs: Yates (for Paterson 68), Paterson D., Corthorn J.
