Free-scoring Bulwell flying high after another Jeffries treble

Have your say

A SECOND successive hat-trick by born-again striker Allan Jeffries fired BULWELL to another goal-laden victory in the Notts Senior League’s Senior Division.

Jeffries has suddenly returned to his best this season after flirting with midfield roles and even management in recent years.

Taking his tally for the season to 12 already, he was far too sharp for struggling Magdala Amateurs as The Bulls followed up their 7-4 win the previous week with a 6-2 romp this time, keeping them on the heels of the leaders.

Just for good measure, Jeffries’s striking partner, Johnny Manders, also plundered a hat-trick.

Bulwell had Magdala on the back foot straight away, with Manders smashing home the opening goal after only eight minutes when spinning on a loose ball in the box.

Moments later, Manders struck again, powering home a terrific header when Jeffries whipped in a fine cross. And with Bulwell coasting, they created loads of chances.

The pick fell to Jamie Moore who, looking back to his old self, forced a brilliant save from the home ‘keeper before somehow hitting a post after rounding the ‘keeper and leaving himself with just a tap-in.

It was left to man-of-the-match Manders to show Moore how to do it as completed his treble before the interval after wonderful build-up play involving Dave ‘Nookie’ Ward.

If the first half was the Johnny Manders Show, the second definitely belonged to Jeffries, who was determined not to be outdone in the scoring stakes.

Mind you, it was not before a scare or two as Magdala dragged a couple of goals back through Chris Jayes and Mark Curry in the opening ten minutes of the half.

Bulwell never really looked like losing their grip, though, and when Jeffries twice sprang the home team’s offside trap, he restored the three-goal advantage.

The scoring was rounded off when substitute Connor Carter brought an excellent save from the Magdala ‘keeper, leaving Jeffries to mop up the pieces.

It was the kind of performance that suggests The Bulls may yet be capable of launching a challenge for the championship under new bosses Steve Osborne and Terry Witts.

But for now, they take a break from league action to tackle the First Round of the Notts FA Intermediate County Cup tomorrow (Saturday) when they travel to Sutton to play Coronation.
