Girls suffer tournament-shootout anguish

ANGUISH befell Linby Colliery Welfare Ladies Under-15s (now Linby Magpies) as they lost a tense penalty-shootout in the final of the Priory Celtic tournament.

The showpiece finished 0-0 but for Linby it wasn’t to be as they lost out on spot-kicks.

However, the disappointment won’t overshadow a day that saw the girls play some exquisite passing football that yielded four wins and a draw from the group stages.

Built on defensive stability, Linby’s flair players were able to showcase their talents with Sammy Barlow (four) and Charley MacLaren, Ellie Bettridge and Jade Benniston, all one apiece, getting onto the score sheet.

But player-of-the-day went to goalkeeper Eleanor Brooks, who took over from MacLaren after the first game and performed excellently with impressive positioning, throws and shot-stopping.
