A TRIO of ambitious and talented gymnasts based in Hucknall were among the stars at the prestigious English national championships.

Becky Downie (20), who is one of the best gymnasts in the country, is set to compete for Great Britain at the upcoming London 2012 Olympics.

She lives on Poppy Mews, off Nottingham Road, along with her younger sister, Ellie (12), who is one of the nation’s best up-and-coming talents. They are teammates of another Hucknall youngster, Katy Bramley (14).

All three were at the sharp end of the competition at the English Championships in Crayford, Kent last weekend.

Pride of place went to Ellie, who has her sights set on the 2016 Olympics in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. For she finished second overall in the 12 and 13-year-olds’ category. Against 36 rivals, she grabbed gold medals on vault and bars, along with a bronze on beam.

The success represented a terrific comeback for Ellie, who couldn’t compete last year because of injury.

Katy took on 43 rivals and won an overall bronze in the junior category for 14 and 15-year-olds. She finished fifth on vault, bars and floor and ninth on beam.

Both Katy and Ellie are now set to be named in England squads.

As for Becky, she was taking part in the senior competition but had to restrict her involvement because she is coming back from injury and needs to protect her body ahead of London 2012.

She scooped a bronze medal on bars and came 11th on beam.
