Their first victory, combined with two agonisingly narrow defeats, made for a much-improved second weekend of action for newly-promoted HUCKNALL LADIES in the British Water Polo League.
Hucknall had feared the worst after three defeats on the opening weekend last month. But their efforts in Liverpool proved they have every right to be competing in the Women’s Second Division.
The first game against Tyldesley was a nip-and-tuck affair, so the 8-7 loss was difficult to take, especially as Hucknall had two goals disallowed in the last quarter, which began with the score all-square at 4-4.
Goals that were allowed came from Giorgia Bosworth (2), Rachael Endy (2), Cara Saunders, Helen Reader and Laura Woodfield.
Hucknall bounced back with a solid display to beat Manchester Comets 7-3 thanks to strikes by Woodfield (2), Endy (2), Jemma Senczyszynm Stacey Roe and Reader. But their frustration returned in a tense final match of the weekend against Liverpool Liverbirds.
By the end of the third quarter, goals from Endy (2), Reader, Saunders and Bosworth ensured a deserved 5-3 lead for the locals. But in a disastrous last seven minutes, they conceded five major fouls, had a player sent from the pool and also gave away a penalty before going down 7-6 to a winning goal THREE SECONDS from the end.
