A GIFTED indoor bowler from Hucknall has rolled her way to a fourth national title in as many years.
Pam Cutts (64), of Papplewick Lane, joined forces with Sue Mart, of Awsworth, and Jackie Turner, of Keyworth, to storm to the two-wood triples title at the English Championships at Nottingham Indoor Bowling Centre.
The success was made even more sweet by the fact that the team, who were skippered by Pam, were on the verge of crashing out in the very first match and were also staring defeat in the face on the very last end of the final.
In that opening match, the trio, who play for Nottingham Bowling Club, found themselves 7-0 down after just two ends against their counterparts from Arun (Bognor Regis). But they picked up their game to win a nailbiter 15-14.
The next day, in the semi-finals, there was a much more routine victory as the local team beat March (Cambridge) 17-10 to set up a showpiece against an in-form trio from Ipswich.
What followed was a humdinger of a match that saw Pam’s charges trailing 6-3 after five ends.
With a partisan crowd behind them, the Nottingham bowlers stormed back to lead 14-12 after 15 ends.
However the Ipswich team hadn’t finished and recovered to lead 15-14 with one end to go.
Nerves of steel were required and Pam’s team showed just that with Sue rolling up tight to the jack with her first bowl. They eventually took four shots to win 18-15.
The victory is the latest in a long line of success for Pam, stretching back to 2007 when she won the national unbadged pairs’ title. In 2008, she took the English and British Isles pairs events with Sue.
In 2009, Pam, who started bowling while living in Hong Kong, and Sue were joined by Jackie to win the English triples championship and the British triples title.
