The kickboxing Callan sisters, of Hucknall, are gunning for more medals on the international stage next week.
For Josie (15) and Lucie (13), of Watnall Road, are taking part in the unified world championships to be held in Florence, Italy.
“My girls are on fire!” exclaimed their dad, ex-soldier Garry, this week. “We are hoping to bring home some gold medals.”
Josie and Lucie have set kickboxing alight since taking up the sport four years ago because they were getting bullied at primary school.
Earlier this year, Josie won a World Kickboxing Association (WKA) title, while Lucie landed an English crown under the WKA banner.
Next week’s championships bring together all of the sport’s organising bodies, not just the WKA. Josie and Lucie are tackling three categories each -- kickboxing on mats, kickboxing in the ring and low kicks on mats. And they go into the tournament in red-hot form after success at the WKA English Championships in Rotherham.
Josie won gold in her category and doubled up two categories higher against a girl 13kg heavier, stopping her in the second round with a left hook. Lucie also won gold and, just for good measure, their little brother, eight-year-old Kyle, picked up a bronze medal.
