ANOTHER heavy defeat left one-time leaders LINBY COLLIERY WELFARE in freefall ahead of their latest local derby against arch rivals HUCKNALL ROLLS LEISUR.
Linby threw away a 2-1 lead to collapse to a 4-2 defeat at Wollaton in the Notts Senior League’s Senior Division.
And the defeat means they have now taken just seven points from their last eight league games — after winning the first seven on the trot.
Linby had several key players again missing for various reasons, including Damian Mann (working), Ash Winfield (working), Matt Peberday (suspended), Aaron Potter (injured), Simon Martin (ill) and manager’s son Jonty Bradshaw (AWOL). So they gave debuts to two new signings in Matt Clowes and Ricky Bates and pulled top scorer Matt Murphy back into midfield.
They started badly when Marek Vipond was given time to turn in the box and pick his spot to give Wollaton a fifth minute lead. But they recovered well to lead by the 25th minute.
From Bates’s cross, Clowes produced a lovely sidefooted volley from six yards. And five minutes later, a corner from assistant player/manager Dave Marlow was fumbled into his own net by home ‘keeper Mark Simpson.
Sadly, Linby’s frailties at the back returned and by the interval, they were behind again at 3-2.
On 26, Scott Litchfield found time and space on the edge of the box to plant a shot in the top corner. And on 35, nobody tracked the run of Vipond, who raced on to a through ball to score.
As the thrilling action continued, Linby pressed hard for an equaliser in the second half when Ricky Hodgson and Mark Jago went close. But the vital next goal went to Wollaton instead as Litchfield pounced on the break ten minutes from time.
LINBY LINE-UP (4-4-2) — Miles/ Woodward, Jago, Howell, Dakers/ Bates, Marlow S., Murphy (man-of-match), Marlow D./ Clowes, Hodgson. Subs: Bernard J. (for Bates 54), Walters (for Clowes 70), Martin (for Howell 83).
