NERVOUS LINBY COLLIERY WELFARE pocketed their first win at Cotgrave for EIGHT years to step up their quest for third place in the Notts Senior League’s Senior Division.
But the gremlins did their best to maintain the hoodoo, stretching back to 2004, because after sailing into a three-goal lead, Linby only just held on to a 3-2 victory.
Overloading their attack in the last ten minutes, Cotgrave cut the deficit when former Linby man Matt Clowes set up substitute Adam Nicholson, who then struck again to set up a nervous finale.
Linby would also have conceded on the half-hour but for a superb penalty-save by Goalkeeper Scott Miles, to foil Ash Robinson.
However, the spot-kick came totally against the run of play because the locals dominated the game without being able to press home their advantage.
Chances came and went for Ricky Hodgson, Matt Murphy, Simon Marlow, Ash Winfield and Aaron Ryan — until, finally, the deadlock was broken in the 69th minute when man-of-the-match Damian Mann was brought down for a penalty that Simon Marlow converted.
Three minutes later, a defensive mix-up gifted substitute Jonty Bradshaw number two as he neatly tucked the ball away from 18 yards.
And it was 3-0 on 80 when Bradshaw was involved in a lovely exchange of passes that cut open Cotgrave’s back four and led to top scorer Murphy sliding past onrushing ‘keeper Dan Johnson with an exquisite finish.
