THE Notts Senior League statisticians have been thumbing through the record-books after an extaordinary, landslide victory by LINBY COLLIERY WELFARE in the First Round of the Notts Senior League’s Senior Cup.

For it is believed that their 16-0 demolition of Vernon Villa could be the biggest win the league has known.

Linby went Christmas goal-crazy, putting their bottom-of-the-table divisional rivals to the sword with some clinical finishing.

No fewer than three players — Matt Murphy, Damian Mann and Matt Clowes — scored hat-tricks, with Clowes netting four times after going on as a 53rd minute substitute!

Playing some fluent football, Linby were three up inside the opening six minutes.

Mann beat his man and crossed for Ricky Hodgson to thump home a half-volley from six yards.

Next, Murphy sprang the offside trap and surprised the Vernon ‘keeper by planting a shot in the roof of the net from 30 yards.

And then good work by Hodgson enabled Mann to get to the by-line and cross for Murphy to tap in.

In the 15th minute, Hodgson again fed Mann, who cut inside to net. And three minutes later, Ash Winfield hit a peach of a shot from fully 30 yards into the top corner.

There then followed 18 minutes without a goal before Linby finished the half with a flourish, adding three more.

Mann converted a one-on-one, fashioned by Winfield, and turned provider to set up Murphy, who then saw a shot saved by the ‘keeper for Jonathan Dakers to snap up the rebound.

Linby refused to let up on their onslaught in the second period, which began with the goal of the tie from man-of-the-match Mann, who sidestepped two players before letting rip from 30 yards.

A superb turn and shot from the edge of the box by Hodgson brought up the double figures and then came a hat-trick inside nine minutes from Clowes.

First he smashed home a penalty after being brought down. Next he tucked away a one-on-one, created by joint player/manager Dave Marlow. And then Clowes turned on the edge of the box to fire into the roof of the net.

Still the goals kept on coming, with three more in the final 18 minutes. Aaron Potter arrowed a 20-yarder into the top corner, Clowes headed in a cross to the far post by fellow sub Simon Martin, who completed the rout when gobbling up a rebound from an acute angle.

LINBY LINE-UP (4-3-3) — Miles/ Marlow D. Jago, Ball, Dakers/ Marlow S., Winfield, Potter/ Mann, Hodgson, Murphy. Subs: Clowes (for Hodgson 53), Martin (for Mann 60), Falconer (for Murphy 71).
