THE PROMOTION credentials of Newstead Abbey suffered a dent as they lost by the nailbiting margin of two runs against fellow high-fliers Hoveringham in Division C of the Gunn And Moore South Notts League.
In an even contest, the locals bowled well at the start of the match with Adam Gilbert (four for 35) and Matt Lane (three for 35) restricting Hoveringham to less than 200 despite 46 from Ben Lee and contributions of 22 and 21 from Shaun Polley and Adam Higill respectively.
In reply, Newstead had Simon Milham (52) to thank for an outstanding half-century.
But they couldn’t get over the line despite 25 from Nick Rose, who had earlier also taken a couple of wickets, and 24 from Andy Paulson.
The main thorn in their side was Murray De Bank, who took four for 57 and, with the help of Stephen Campbell (two for 25) and Brett Lear (two for 41) left Newstead stranded just two runs short.
