Olympic dream over for Downie

HUCKNALL gymnast Becky Downie (20) has failed to make the GB artistics gymnastics team for London 2012.

Downie, whose 12th position finish at the 2008 Beijing Olympics was the highest ever finish for a Brit, has been battling with a serious Achilles injury this year, but was getting back to her best form.

She has been named as the team’s reserve.

Writing on Twitter on Wednesday, she said: “It’s finally out & unfortunately I’m a reserve for Team GB!! I’ve had a very tough ride these past 2 years but this is NOT the end ....

“Thank you to everyone, friends, family & fans that have helped my through the tough times, this is definitely one of the hardest things ...

“But I want to wish everyone representing Team GB the BEST of luck, we all knew it was going to be a tough decision.”

A clearly disappointed Downie later added: “Fresh start, yesterday was tough but now all I can do is channel that frustration into my routines & be the best reserve I can for my team! I’ll obviously be backing my team 100% and hopefully they’ll bring back some incredible results.”
