Only one point splits top four in title race

Only one point separates the top four teams as the HUCKNALL EPA POOL LEAGUE enters its final month of a thrilling campaign.

Royal British Legion B continue to top the pile after stretching their unbeaten season to 16 matches with a 5-3 success at home to Liberal Club.

But they continue to be stalked by Station Hotel (Hucknall) B, Park Tavern and Empire A, all of whom kept up the pressure with wins.

Legion B recovered from 2-1 down to overcome Liberal -- thanks to four victories on the spin from Geoff Taylor, Malc Grocock, Dean Dymock and the wily pairing of Grocock and Dymock.

It was much more comfortable for Station B, who eased into a 5-0 lead at Yew Tree before ending up 6-2 in front. Their victors were Andrea Green, Roger Green, Dan Butler, Sean Chauntry, Dave Butler and the pairing of Dan Butler and Ian Wikeley.

Tavern were in no mood for slip-ups, whitewashing Bestwood Village Social Club 8-0, with Billy Wood successful on singles and pairs.

Meanwhile Empire hit back from 3-2 down to win 5-3 at Harrier H2O, for whom Adam Fowkes, Dave Ellis and Aidan Flanagan had set up a possible upset. The visitors’ late heroes were Steve Wood, who won on singles and pairs, and then Tony Dobb, who beat Martin Saxton on the last, decisive leg.

The week’s other match was a 4-4 draw in the inter-pub derby between Green Dragon and The Dragon.

TWO new leaders of the league’s individual rankings table are Adam Fowkes, of Harrier H2O, and Dean Dymock, of Legion, with 92 points and an 82% strike rate.

Three points behind is Lee Burton, of Yew Tree, followed by no fewer than eight players on 87 points. They are: Empire trio Curly Johnstone, Steve Wood and Tony Dobb, Legion duo Mark Hardstaff and Malc Grocock, plus Bill Clark (Liberal), Billy Wood (Tavern) and Dave Butler (Station B).
