THE sparkling debut season of Empire Muppets just got better and better — as an 8-0 whitewash extended their lead to two points at the top of the HUCKNALL EPA POOL LEAGUE.
With second-placed Empire A out of action, Muppets took full advantage to rout Royal British Legion B with the help of a couple of eight-ball clearances.
Former leaders Royal British Legion A leapt above Empire A after losing to them the previous week in their first reverse of the campaign. They beat Liberal Club 5-3 thanks to victories from Tim McShane, Ryan Orton, Nidge Orton and the pairings of McShane and Rich Devine and Orton and Nigel Burton.
Defending champions Spot-On Low-C also kept themselves in the title hunt with a rousing fightback at home to Yew Tree. They looked set for defeat when trailing 3-1 but recovered in the hands of Colin Draycott, Ryan Norris, Steve Thompson and the partnership of Draycott and Norris.
The top four are now seven points clear of the rest of the league, which is headed by Station Hotel (Hucknall) B, 7-1 winners at Green Dragon. Station’s stars on the night were Dave Butler, Andrea Green, Scott Oxford, Alan Foster, Paul Heath and the pairings of Butler and Ian Wikeley and Oxford and Jamie Henson.
The week’s remaining two fixtures resulted in 4-4 draws — between Sherwood Ranger and Chequers Inn B and Chequers Inn A and Bestwood Village Social Club.
Ranger roared back from 4-0 down, while bottom-of-the-table Chequers A picked up only their eighth point of the season thanks to wins on the last two legs.
n A WEEK’S rest failed to dislodge Empire A’s Geoff Taylor from the top of the league’s individual rankings table.
Taylor has 114 points, three in front of Shane Wood, of Chequers B.
