THE HUCKNALL EPA POOL LEAGUE has new leaders after the defending champions were held to a 4-4 draw by the season’s surprise package.

Royal British Legion A have taken over top spot by extending their 100% start to the new campaign to four matches.

They replace Spot-On Low-C, who became the latest team to find out that Yew Tree are an emerging force in the league.

Tree led 3-1 at one stage and looked on course for a famous victory. In the end, they relied a last-leg win to salvage a point as both sides retained their unbeaten records. Low-C’s victors were Sean Chauntry, Ryan Norris, Dean Britton and the pairing of Chauntry and Simon Thompson.

As for Legion A, they hit back from 2-0 down to secure a 5-3 victory away to Liberal Club. The pairing of Rich Devine and Nigel Burton started the recovery, which was continued by Martin Bremner, Gaz Woodfield, Nidge Orton and the partnership of Orton and Bremner.

Meanwhile Royal British Legion B leapt into third place in the table with a 5-3 home win over Empire Muppets. It was all-square after the first six legs, with singles/pairs doubles from Joe Etherington and Ashley Radford very much keeping the visitors in the hunt. But Legion B grabbed the points on the final two frames, courtesy of Ash Griffiths and Malc Grocock.

At the wrong end of the table, three teams — Chequers Inn A, Seven Stars and Green Dragon — have yet to register a victory so far this term.

Chequers A collected a creditable 4-4 draw with Bestwood Village Social Club but Stars and Dragon slumped to heavy defeats.

Stars were whitewashed 8-0 by Empire A, for whom Bryan Woodward, Ashley Dobb, Geoff Taylor, Steve Wood, Robbie Roylance, Mick Foulkes and the pairings of Roylance and Foulkes and Dave Wainwright and Tony Dobb were in unstoppable form.

Dragon lost 6-2 away to Station Hotel (Hucknall) B, who celebrated their first win of the campaign, courtesy of singles triumphs from Scott Oxford, Alan Foster, Paddy McShane, David Butler, Paul Hibbard and Paul Heath.

The week’s remaining fixture resulted in a 5-3 success for Chequers inn B at home to Sherwood Ranger. Among their winners were Shane Wood, Rich Lewis, Phil Dalmedo and the pairing of Kath Orange and league secretary Jill Dobb.
