IT’S not often the league champions get taught a lesson by a bunch of muppets!
But it happened in the HUCKNALL EPA POOL LEAGUE last week when Spot-On Low-C surrendered their unbeaten start to the new season in a 5-3 defeat at home to league newcomers Empire Muppets!
Low-C were chasing the game from the off and although they pulled it back to 2-2 at one stage, the Muppets were soon in command, taking the next three legs in the hands of Joe Etherington, Ashley Radford and the pairing of Michael Holmes-Parker and Dave Rhodes.
The result lifted the Muppets to fourth place in the table, level on points with Low-C and second-placed Empire A, who whitewashed Harrier 8-0 with the help of a singles/pairs double from Rob Roylance.
The clear leaders remain Royal British Legion A, who stretched their 100% record to seven matches with a 6-2 victory at home to Station Hotel (Hucknall) B. Tim McShane, Rich Devine, Nidge Orton, Martin Bremner, Tom Burton and the pairing of Devine and Orton saw the tabletoppers home.
The big story at the bottom of the table was a first win of the campaign for Green Dragon, who stunned high-riding Royal British Legion B in an amazing 7-1 triumph. Dragon never looked back after a first-leg success for Cliff Thompson, who later doubled up on pairs.
The result left only two teams yet to win this term — Seven Stars, who lost 5-3 at home to Sherwood Ranger, and Chequers Inn A. However the latter did well to hold unbeaten Yew Tree to a 4-4 draw, especially after trailing 2-0 and 4-2. Ian Manders was their hero with wins on singles and pairs.
The week’s remaining fixture, between Liberal Club and Bestwood Village Social Club, also resulted in a 4-4 draw after the home side threw away a 4-1 lead.
EMPIRE A duo Steve Wood and Geoff Taylor are the new leaders of the league’s individual rankings table with 100% records and 49 points after seven games.
