ONE of the best defenders English football has ever produced is the latest guest to star in the round of sportsman’s evenings at the Rolls-Royce Leisure Club in Hucknall.
Phil Thompson, best known now as a Sky Sports TV pundit, takes to the stage at the Watnall Road club on Thursday December 8.
The 57-year-old Thompson was an integral part of the Liverpool sides that brought glory to Anfield in the 1970s and 1980s.
He made 340 appearances for the club, helping them win the league title seven times, the European Cup twice, the FA Cup once, the League Cup twice and the UEFA Cup once. He also won 42 caps for England between 1976 and 1982.
Thompson’s proudest moment came in 1981 when he lifted the European Cup as Liverpool skipper after a 1-0 win over Real Madrid in the Paris final. He only lost his place in the side with the emergence of the formidable partnership of Alan Hansen and Mark Lawrenson from 1984.
Locally, Nottingham Forest fans might also remember him as the man who brought down John O’Hare to give away the penalty that gave The Reds a 1-0 victory in the 1978 League Cup final replay at Old Trafford!
Tickets, priced £20, are still available for next Thursday’s do. Ring organiser Jez Corthorn on 07910 392751.
