THE NEW local football season has been given a huge boost with the news that the Dispatch’s fantastic Goals Awards, sponsored by Specsavers, are back.

The competition was a big success when launched for the first time last season. And this week, Hucknall’s Specsavers branch, on High Street, confirmed they were delighted to provide £400 worth of backing again.

The SPECSAVERS GOALS AWARDS offers prizes for the teams and players in the Dispatch district who score the most goals in competitive league and cup matches during the 2011/12 season.

There are four categories — for teams and players in Saturday and Sunday football. And there is a £100 prize up for grabs for the winners in each category.

Last year’s winners were Boots Athletic (Saturday Team), Boots striker Kev Walker (Saturday Player), Real Empire (Sunday Team) and Real Empire striker Phillip Gouldby (Sunday Player).

The competition covers all games played in the Notts Senior League and Central Midlands League on Saturdays and the Notts Sunday Morning League and Notts Combination on Sundays.

Players, officials and fans can follow updated charts that will appear in the Dispatch every week, starting next Friday.

Dispatch editor Richard Silverwood: “The Goals Awards are a measure of our commitment to grassroots football in the Hucknall and Bulwell area. We are delighted that Specsavers has generously agreed to sponsorship for another year.”

Stephen Archer, who is a director of the Hucknall Specsavers store and a Liverpool fan, said: “As a keen football supporter myself, I think it’s great to be involved in the local football scene.

“It is nice to hand out rewards for players and teams who show attacking flair. This is an extension of our community work at Specsavers in Hucknall, as well as continuing my passion for football.

“I would like to wish all the local teams good luck for the season and I hope they bang in the goals!”
