THE AMAZING early-season goalscoring record of striker Allan Jeffries rolled on with his THIRD hat-trick on the trot for free-scoring BULWELL.
Jeffries took his tally to 15 in just nine games with a treble to help Bulwell beat Sutton-in-Ashfield outfit Coronation 5-1 in the First Round of the Notts FA Intermediate County Cup.
Mind you, for most of the tie, it wasn’t as comfortable as the scoreline suggests for The Bulls, who failed to reproduce their flowing football of recent weeks.
Indeed the first half was drab and goalless, leaving joint manager Terry Witts an angry man and fearing an upset against an ordinary Coronation side who play in the Premier Division of the Midland Amateur Alliance.
Thankfully a few harsh words did the trick and Bulwell emerged for the second period with all guns blazing. But not before the home team had stolen a shock 50th minute lead when a deft header at the near post ended up in the net via debutant goalkeeper James Logan’s parry and the bar.
Bulwell’s response was immediate as substitute Jamie Carter found Dwayne Soar for a header across goal that Jeffries tapped home. And they finally went ahead on 67 when Connor Carter headed home a crossfield ball by Jamie Moore.
By now, Bulwell were rampant and man-of-the-match Jeffries completed his treble with near-identical goals after defensive mix-ups.
The win was completed when Jamie Carter found space to smash home a low, hard drive from 20 yards. And by the end of the tie, all that was concerning The Bulls was a potentially serious injury for defender Chris Murdock after a two-footed challenge that earned only a yellow card from the lenient referee.
BULWELL LINE-UP — Logan/ Ward, Murdock, Gretton, Soar D., Moore, Banister, Spencer (Dean), Jeffries, Manders, Carter C. Subs: Carter J. (for Gretton 45), Spencer (Daz) (for Murdock 73), Keetley J.
