An up-and-coming teenage ice-skater from Hucknall has taken a step closer to her dreams of international success by landing a lucrative sponsorship deal.
Schoolgirl Sian Bettridge instantly fell in love with the sport at the age of eight after watching legendary duo Torvill And Dean on the hit TV show, ‘Dancing On Ice’.
Since then, she has fought her way into the prestigious Skate Academy at the National Ice Centre in Nottingham, bouncing back from five rejections, and she finished an excellent 15th in her first appearance at the British Championships.
Now the 14-year-old Holgate Academy pupil’s quest to compete at the highest level has received a major boost after an appeal to leading local housebuilder Taylor Wimpey East Midlands resulted in a £4,000 sponsorship deal.
The money will be used to pay for boots, competition costumes and all-important private tuition, which Sian’s mum, Amanda, and dad Craig hope will fulfil her potential as a figure-skating star of the future.
“Sian has worked incredibly hard to get where she is today, and she wants to go further,” said Amanda. ”The sponsorship will make a huge difference. It’s an expensive sport, so I can’t thank Taylor Wimpey enough for what they’re doing to help.”
Sian’s rigorous training regime involves hitting the ice six days a week, with one or two hours’ training, both before and after school, and private lessons twice a week too.
“What she has achieved so far has been down to her own focus and determination, with support from her family and school,” added Amanda. “It’s her dream to compete at international level and to go as far as her ability will take her.”
