WORRIED Linby Colliery Welfare are hoping to resurrect the career of a former professional as their slide in form continued with a shock exit from the Notts FA Intermediate County Cup.

Underdogs Southwell St Mary’s beat Linby 4-3 in the Second Round tie, even though they were reduced to ten men by a red card after only 12 minutes.

Now the locals have swooped for Hucknall-based defender Terry Henshaw (31), who played for Notts County and, most notably, Burton Albion under Nigel Clough in a pro career that spanned eight years.

Since sustaining a serious injury, Henshaw has been unable to hold down a regular place during fleeting spells in non-league football with Worksop Town, Carlton Town and Hucknall Town. But Linby are hoping the drop in standard will help him inject new life into their season.

St Mary’s came to Linby with a growing reputation as the leaders of the Notts Senior League’s (NSL) First Division. And they were ahead from the opening minute when Chris Walker punished a defensive mix-up.

However, as a side sitting third in the NSL’s top flight, Linby were still favourites to win the tie — and especially so when visiting ‘keeper Dave Walker was sent off for taking out Jonty Bradshaw in a one-on-one, resulting in a penalty that Simon Marlow converted.

However St Mary’s restored their lead eight minutes later with a simple header at the far post from Dan Weiss. And although Marlow struck again on 40, heading in a cross from his joint player/manager brother, Dave, a stupid foul by Simon Martin gifted the ten-man Saints a spot-kick of their own two minutes into the second half, enabling Walker to make it 3-2.

In a superb tie to watch, Linby piled up the chances in response — only for the visitors to net a fourth on the break when Walker completed his hat-trick.

A good opportunist goal by fit-again striker and man-of-the-match Damian Mann gave Linby a lifeline. But St Mary’s stood firm to complete their giantkilling act.

LINBY LINE-UP (4-4-2) — Miles/ Martin, Jago, Peberday, Dakers/ Bradshaw J., Marlow S., Winfield, Marlow D./ Murphy, Mann. Subs: Ingram (for Dakers 65), Bernard J. (for Marlow D. 72), Falconer.
