Tennis teen Freya Christie serves Masters ace to end year on a high

The year 2014 finished on a high note for Hucknall’s teenage tennis star, Freya Christie.

For she won the Aegon British Tour End-Of-Season Masters tournament for the second year running.

Freya (17) successfully defended the title at the Nottingham Tennis Centre on University Boulevard, beating the world number 704, Mariam Bolkvadze, of Georgia, 6-4 1-6 6-1 in an entertaining final. Not only did she pick up the prestigious trophy but also a cheque for £2,000.

“It’s great to win this title for the second time,” said globetrotting Freya, whose Hucknall base is the family home on Beardall Street . “The prize money will really help fund more travel to pro events abroad in the early part of 2015.”

The Aegon British Tour comprises a circuit of tournaments, designed to complement the international calendar. It gives up-and-coming players the opportunity to gain experience in their quest to become professional players.

At the end of the year, the top points-scorers on the Tour leaderboard are invited to play in the Masters.

Freya, who is currently ranked the 96th best female junior in the world and number 888 on the senior pro circuit, won two other Tour events, at Nottingham and Loughborough, during 2014.
