Thriller is killer as Linby are held

A THRILLER for the fans was a killer for LINBY COLLIERY WELFARE, who were held to a 3-3 draw by ten-man Attenborough in the Notts Senior League’s Senior Division.

Linby felt they should have won the game but conceded sloppy goals and only snatched a point with an 85th-minute equaliser — even though the home side had Lee Prewett sent off in the 53rd minute for assaulting Simon Marlow.

The captivating action began when Dean Webster headed home a James Biggins free-kick to give the home side a tenth-minute lead.

Linby responded well and a burst of two goals in as many minutes gave them the lead by the interval.

First top scorer Matt Murphy found the bottom corner with a precise finish after Matt Clowes had laid off a fine ball into the area by Damian Mann. And then Clowes himself was on hand to steer home a rebound after Murphy’s 20-yard shot had been parried by ‘keeper Lewis Soal.

Minutes after the red card, Linby almost extended their advantage when Aaron Potter’s volley was brilliantly tipped on to a post by Soal.

But, instead, they allowed Attenborough to equalise as substitute Michael Cross capitalised on poor defending.

Worse was to come in the 68th minute when another sub, Steve Oldham, edged the home team in front.

So, after two more fine saves by Soal, to deny Murphy and Mann, and after Clowes had struck a post, it was with some relief that Linby levelled. Potter delivered a terrific cross and there was sub Ricky Hodgson heading into the bottom corner.
