IT’S not often you bump into an England footballer at your end-of-season celebration.
But that’s exactly what happened to the lads of HUCKNALL SPORTS UNDER-13S, of the Young Elizabethan League.
Manager Stewart Bowley took the team for a drink at the Horse And Groom pub in Linby to toast their achievement in finishing third in the Saturday Second Division.
And they were amazed to see former Nottingham Forest defender Michael Dawson (28), now with Tottenham, in there.
“I asked him if he minded having a photo taken with the lads — and he was happy to oblige,” explained Bowley.
“He then spent a few moments talking to the boys about the season and said ‘bad luck’ for missing out on promotion by one point.”
Dawson, who was won four England caps, made 84 appearances for Forest between 2001 and 2005 before moving on to Spurs, where he has played 176 times.
He really cheered up Sports, who were the only team to beat runaway champions Hyson Green Cavaliers and also took Mansfield League champions Ashfield to extra-time in the county cup.
