YOUNGSTERS at Nottingham City Golf Club are celebrating after sealing promotion to Division One of the Nottinghamshire Union of Golf Clubs Junior League.
It marks the continuation of a remarkable rise for the club, based in Bulwell, since it was entered into the league in 2011 when a five-year plan was put in place to get into the top division.
And having been promoted from Division Three in their first season, they followed that up by winning the Division Two title in 2012.
Juniors organiser Adrian Newton said: “The club had a massive boost in 2010 when the managing director of Stealth Securities, James Turner, offered his financial support to help boost the depleted junior section after we had lost a number to other clubs and also seen several turn 18-years-old and become full members.
“We got together to try and improve the standard of the juniors that were left and also increase numbers. The financial support paid for weekly group lessons from the club’s long-time professional Cyril Jepson and paid massive dividends straight away, with numbers growing from just five to around 14.
“So we entered the Junior League in Division Three and after winning the first match against Edwalton Golf Club they just got better and better and sealed promotion.
“This year, they lost only two matches out of the eight they played and have been promoted as champions.”
The club’s squad (pictured above) increased further with over 20 juniors from ages as young as five-years-old now going along for lessons avery Tuesday night.
Mr Newton added: “This has been an outstanding achievement for the club, the team, the squad and the teaching staff for all the hard work they have put in.
“The support from all the parents has also been commented on wherever the team have travelled to.
“I extend massive congratulations to all the players and hope we can increase to even bigger numbers over the next few years.”
