Youngsters in spotlight

DEBUTANT Emily Butler, in her first-ever gala, won her race and inspired the fledgling swimmers of HUCKNALL FALCON into a creditable third spot in the Ashfield Cup junior event.

Competing at Hucknall Leisure Centre in the invitational competition, Butler took the nine-year-old girls’ race — Falcon’s only win of the night.

But there was a hatful of second places and personal-best times secured by the club’s younger swimmers.

Runners-up spots came from: Emma Hutson, Lizzie Widdowson, Ellie-Mae Gunn (junior girls’ captain) and Sophie Melvin (12-and-under girls’ 4x25m medley relay); debutant Bradley Gregory (nine-year-olds’ 25m freestyle); Sophie Hutson (nine-year-olds girls’ 25m freestyle and 25m butterfly); Ellie Barker (ten-year-old girls’ 50m freestyle); Archie Pennington (12-and-under boys’ 50m butterfly, personal-best (PB); Sophie Melvin (12-and-under girls’ 50m butterfly), Ellie Barker, Bethany Hopkinson, Sophie Hutson and Butler (ten-and-under girls’ 4x25m relay); Adam Webber (11-and-under boys’ 50m butterfly, PB); Gunn (11-and-under girls’ 50m butterfly, PB, and 50m freestyle); Emma Hutson (12-and-under girls’ 50m backstroke, PB, and 50m breaststroke, PB); Pennington (12-and-under boys’ 50m breaststroke, PB); Ryan Patel (ten-year-old boys’ 50m breaststroke, PB); Jake Biggs (nine-year-old boys’ 25m backstroke); Harvey Green (11-and-under boys’ 50m breaststroke); Emily Butler, Ryan Patel, Jake Biggs and Eve Tuckwood (mixed 4x25m medley relay).

Other PB times came from Jake Biggs (ten-year-old boys’ 50m freestyle); Jack Burbanks (12-and-under boys’ 50m backstroke); and George Webster (ten-year-old boys’ 50m backstroke).

THE Falcon swimmers didn’t do so well in the overall standings in the recent Sports Centre League gala at Lammas Leisure Centre in Sutton, finishing in last place.

But Calum Murray performed well, completing a double in the 15-and-under individual medley (PB) and the 15-and-under 50m butterfly.

Second-place finishes came the way of Kyle Raison (13-and-under 50m butterfly, PB) and Ellie-May Gunn (11-and-under 50m butterfly).

There was also a rush of 15 other PB times.

RESULT — Sherwood A 204 points, CABSC 196, Worksop 160, Mansfield A 141, Retford 136, FALCON 88.
