Crowning a remarkable year Kirkby opera singer Lucy Kay has signed a record deal with Sony Classical.
The former member of Mansfield girls’ choir Cantamus was pipped at the final of ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent by all-male classical group Collabro, but is looking forwards to a promising career.
Lucy (25), is now busy learning the repertoire for the album, which will be released in October.
Said Lucy: “I cannot wait - I am so excited. This is what I have always dreamed of, but it will be a bit terrifying because I have to fill an album.
“There is some pressure because you have to deliver your absolute best - it will be hard work but I am ready for it.
“It is on pre-order on Amazon and people are buying it already, so that has given me some faith.”
The former Ashfield School pupil also told Chad that her new record label hopes to take her on an American tour once the album has been released.
“That would be amazing,” she said. “I have watched Katherine Jenkins do all of this and I cannot stop smiling.
“But I miss Britain’s Got Talent, although I was worried about how I was portrayed.”
Lucy was subjected to some quite unkind comments via social networking site Twitter during her time on the show, which brought memories of fierce childhood bullying flooding back.
But the singer defied calls for teeth straightening work and other abusive remarks and used the abuse to motivate her.
“I could not believe it when I got past the semi-finals,” she said. “I always dreamed of this but never really had the courage to believe I would really get here.
“My mum has done all that for me really, and my boyfriend. Other people believed it for me.”
Lucy’s debut album will feature songs she performed on Britain’s Got Talent and others she would have liked to.
She added: “There will be songs from Madame Buttefly and Carmen and big Arias which I hope will allow me to connect with the audience, even though it is on an album.
“There will also be something for the younger generation that have been changed into an operatic style.”
Other good news is, if you cannot get over to the USA any time soon, you can catch Lucy with good friends Collabro at Nottingham’s Theatre Royal on 30th January as part of a 24-date UK tour.
