Concert was a real triumph

The combined talents of Bestwood Male Voice Choir and the award winning RAF Waddington Voluntary Band has contributed to the success of a Gala Concert supporting the Lincs. and Notts. Air Ambulance Service, writes Peter Jordan.

Staged at Nottingham’s Albert Hall and hosted by the choir in its 63rd anniversary year, the concert delighted an appreciative audience.

The 50-strong choir, which has singers from Eastwood and district in its ranks, was conducted by impeccable musical director Mirek Rus and talented accompanist Hilary Griffiths, and served up a new repertoire of songs with classical and contemporary numbers making their appeal.

But “golden oldies” still live on and The Sound of Silence, Nessun Dorma and Close to You were delivered with style and panache by the choir which was on top form.

The immaculate 20-strong RAF band conducted by Bandmaster Dave Jackson blazed an impressive trail hitting the mark with Rodgers and Hammerstein classics and raising the bar with its Big Band classics.

But in true RAF tradition glorious interpretations of Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines” and a dazzling Dambusters March proved to be the crowning glory.

Compered by choir stalwart Adrian Griffiths, the gala concert is expected to raise a considerable amount for the charity.

Lincs. and Notts.Air Ambulance charity worker Sue Curtis expressed her gratitude to the choir, the band and the audience.

“Their continued support for a vital service to the country is greatly appreciated. Both the choir and the band have served up a lovely concert performance to help our cause,”she said.

Choir chairman Colin Pursglove expressed his gratitude too. “The sponsors and supporters have been wonderful. We had a big setback when we had to change the time of the concert at the last minute due to the Robin Hood Marathon, but despite that hiccup the Gala Concert has hit all the right notes and we are pleased with the outcome”,he said
