One of folk music’s brightest stars, Yorkshire’s Kate Rusby, will be performing at Mansfield Palace Theatre later this month, as she embarks on intimate smaller venue tour.

In her nearly 20 year career, the singer said that she has seen an increase in the interest shown in folk music among the old and the young.

“When I first got going there were only a handful of young people interested in folk music, but gradually over the last 10 years I’d say there are more young people both playing and listening to the music,” she said.

“Which of course is amazing as it means the music is safe, it can continue to be passed along down the generations.”

Kate does not mind being labelled as a folk singer because, frankly, it ‘lets people know what kind of music they are going to hear’, and she is passionate about the live performance element of this traditional music style.

“It is a form of music that is in its element when live, mainly because it is very interactive as audiences always sing along and get involved in the stories and songs,” she said.

“Also that is folk music’s roots, it was a way of passing on stories and information, long before it was ever recorded, and it is relatively recent that it has moved into the concert form as we know it.”

Kate will sing a range of much-loved classics from her back catalogue at her Mansfield show, which will include a mix of traditional songs and her own compositions.

“I have always written songs, and all of my albums have been a mix of trad and my own songs,” Kate explained.

“I have always tweaked and sculptured trad songs that I sing so it’s just a step onward from that really. I tend to write late at night, or when there is no one around, and I just sit with my guitar and plonk around on it and sometimes a song starts to form.”

Kate Rusby is performing in Mansfield on 27th March.

Tickets are £22, concessions £20 and children £18.
