The choir will be performing Messiah, George Frederic Handel’s extraordinary and hugely popular work.

Written by Handel in 1741, the sacred composition for choir, soloists and orchestra is vastly different to some of his previous works, namely operas.

These productions required the expense of a stage, scenery and musicians. The often temperamental soloists even came to blows during performances.

Compare that to the wonderful music of Messiah, where scriptural text has been set to music by Handel, all in just under four weeks. Leaving most of his £20,000 wealth to charities on his death in 1759, he was known to be very benevolent by nature. Indeed, the first words sung in Messiah are ‘Comfort ye…my people.’

The Nottingham Harmonic Choir, the excellent Orchestra da Camera and superb soloists will be performing this work on Saturday at 7pm, under the choir’s musical director Richard Laing.

Tickets to see Nottingham Harmonic Choir perform Messiah are £12, £14, £18, and £20 (plus concessions). Accompanied children get in free.

Tickets are available from the Royal Centre box office on 0115 989 5555 or by going to www.trch.co.uk

The Nottingham Harmonic Choir was started in 1856, and is the civic choir of Nottingham.

Many world renowned conductors and orchestras have been part of their history, and up to present day.

The performance of Messiah leads to the Christmas season and two family Carol Concerts on December 20 and 22.
