Theatre group will recreate famous Saturday night wrestling

A glimpse of 1970’s Saturday sporting television is coming to Mansfield’s Create Theatre next month.

Telling the tale of famous wrestlers, Big Daddy Vs Giant Haystacks, Brian Mitchell and Joseph Nixon will show how millions of Britons were captured in the 1970s and 1980s by the sporting phenomenon of watching two men pretend to fight each other.

Komedia Entertainment and The Foundry Group will bring the award-winning knockout tale of the rise and fall of British wrestling to Mansfield audiences on 15th February.

The Return of Great British Wrestling has won best theatre award at the Buxton Fringe, best actor award at the Brighton Festival Awards and Fringe Guru’s Editor’s Choice Award.

Adam Pownall, theatre co-ordinator, said: “This is set to be a hilarious, action-packed show and for anyone who remembers the original belly flops and headlocks from the 70s and 80s it will bring back many memories.

“Equally, for those younger generations who don’t remember the original wrestling, they’re set for a fun night. This working class theatre is very reflective of the era when times were harder and expensive nights out weren’t common place and a family gathering round the television was a typical Saturday night scene.”

Tickets for the performance, which starts at 7.30pm, cost £8 each, £6 for concessions and £5 for students.

A tag-team ticket for two costs £10. Tickets can be purchased by visiting the website at www.createtheatre.co.uk or by calling 01623 413363.
