SP Electronics has been in the town since it was established as a domestic appliance repair shop called Skeavington & Payne in 1954 by Jim Payne and business partner Harold Skeavington.

Jim ran the business until 1987 when his son, Mick, bought it and changed it to SP Electronics.

But with the harsh economic effects of the Covid pandemic continuing to bite, Mick has now decided there is no future in keeping the shop on High Street open.

Instead, the business will move online and Mick will continue to operate from home.

Mick said: “It’s been a long while we’ve been going and it’s sad to finish but trade has died down and that’s mostly down to the Covid pandemic.

"I know shops are about to re-open again but we looked at it and decided it just wasn’t worth it trying to carry on with the shop – there’s no demand.

"It’s been a very hard decision to have to close down the shop, we’ve been around forever, but Covid and lockdown has just really hit our trade so hard.

"It’s just had a really bad impact on us.

Mick will now work from his home workshop and will continue doing repairs.

But he admits he will miss the atmosphere of the shop.

He continued: “I’ll miss the people coming into the shop and talking with them because that’s part of running shop and something you really enjoy.”

After this weekend, the business will continue to operate through it’s website here.
