This car v bike drag race is different, because both vehicles are made by the same company. Sort of.

Iconic Italian sports bike company Ducati isn’t really Italian any more. These days, it’s owned by Audi. What better excuse – sorry, reason – for taking two of ‘Audi’s’ fastest products along to the two-mile straight at Bruntingthorpe in the Midlands to find out which one will get through the classic acceleration tests quicker.

Representing the car fraternity we have the Audi R8. It’s not the Plus version: it’s ‘only’ the regular R8. But even that has four-wheel drive, launch control, and a naturally aspirated 5.2-litre V10 engine pumping out 540bhp.

In the one-wheel drive corner we have a Ducati Panigale V4. Again, it’s not the very sportiest Panigale – that would be the 3kg lighter V4 S – but this four-cylinder monster from Ducati still manages to generate a whopping 211bhp from just 1103cc – and that’s without a turbo, too.

It does have launch control, though, just like the R8, so maybe it’s going to be a closer battle than you might think.

Let’s find out which is first from nought to 60mph, from nought to 100mph, and then on through the standing quarter and half mile marks. And let’s see what magically happens to the Ducati when it reaches 186mph…
