Club member, Pam Whitehead, is a staff nurse at Nottingham City Hospital and asked other members if anyone could supply washbags for the nurses on her ward.

And the response was overwhelming from Inner Wheel peers and the wider community.

The bags, which are approximately the size of a pillowcase, allow the user to put their soiled scrubs inside, go through the washing machine and drier and be ready to wear the next time without being handled or exposed to any risk.

In a very short time more than 300 bags were produced and donations of fabric, money and lots of treats were gratefully accepted.

Pam explained that the treats went into the hospital ‘Wobble Room’ where staff can go for some well deserved respite when things are overwhelming.

Vicky Moss from the club said: “As word got round, more requests came from other wards and they were also provided with the bags.

“Eventually nurses at King’s Mill Hospital also asked for help and Inner Wheel responded and bags and treats were sent.

“Some members of Inner Wheel, not on total lockdown, were able to visit care homes around Hucknall and also provide them with treats, bags, etc. which were gratefully received.

“In return Inner Wheel have received some wonderful letters and cards expressing their thanks.

“Inner Wheel would also like to thank all of the friends from Hucknall and the surrounding area for their donations and help. But, most of all they would like to thank all of the nurses, carers and front line people for their dedication and selfless care given in these testing times.”
