There were no patients on a ventilator as of Sunday, August 9, down from a high of 20 in April, according to the latest statistics from NHS England.

This is the first time a detailed breakdown of the number of Covid-19 patients by hospital trusts has been released, with only the daily number of deaths previously published.

It reveals the true scale of the challenge which faced the NHS in Mansfield and Ashfield at the peak of the pandemic, and how cases have since fallen dramatically.

At Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs King’s Mill Hospital in Sutton, Mansfield Community Hospital and Newark Hospital, 70 beds were occupied by coronavirus patients on April 6, but that figure had dropped to one by Sunday, August 9, the latest date for which data is available.

There were 20 people with Covid-19 in mechanical ventilation beds on April 12, with none on August 9.

To put those figures in context, as of Sunday a total of 369 beds across the trust were occupied and three people required mechanical ventilation.

The last patient to be admitted to the hospital with Covid-19 was on July 29. The last patient with Covid-19 requiring a ventilator was on June 14.

Mansfield and Ashfield continue to have relatively low rates of Covid-19 infection compared to other parts of the country, according to the latest Government figures.

In Mansfield there were two cases recorded in the seven days to August 9 compared to three new cases recorded in the seven days to August 2.

In Ashfield there were four cases recorded in the seven days to August 9 compared to three new cases recorded in the seven days to August 2.

This gives a fall in the rate per 100,000 people in Mansfield from 2.7 to 1.8 and a rise of 2.3 to 3.1 in Ashfield.

Since the start of the pandemic Ashfield has had a total of 580 confirmed cases, Mansfield has had a total of 359 confirmed cases.
